Kandy Esala Perahera

It is when the hill-capital Kandy is illuminated as the time when Kandy Esala Perahera is held for the blessings for a good harvest in the country.

Temple of the Tooth, Kandy

Held in the full moon month of Esala, coinciding with July/August, it is concurred for 10 days with absolutely awe-inspiring activities of drummers, dancers, whip crackers, troops of majestic elephants adorned in eye-catching shawls along with the Maligawa Tusker embellished, who carries a great canopy that shelters the cask hoisting the sacred Tooth Relic placed in the Temple of the Tooth, that magnet not only pilgrims, but also tourists to the hill country of Kandy.

The Esala Perahera comprises of five separate peraheras: four from the Kandy devales to the deities. Led by the Dalada Maligawa Perahera the second to lead is Natha, where third is Sri Lanka’s Guardian, Vishnu, whereas the fourth goes to God Kataragama as fifth goes to the goddess of chastity, Pattini. It is well known that Sri Lanka is refined with such wonderful festivals like Kandy Esala Perahera, the festival that recalls our history.
